A new BOI factory of Tris-Star Apparel Exports was opened at Thambalagamuwa in Trincomalee. The factory, located just 10 kilometers from Trincomalee, is built on 5 acres of land and represents an investment of US$ 2 million. It will be manufacturing ready made garments such as baby wear and clothes for children and will be exported mainly to the United Kingdom, to companies such as Debenhams, Marks and Spencers and Mothercare.

Among the guests was Mr. Namal Rajapaksa, Chairman of the Tharuniyata Hetak Movement who spoke of the importance of youth in development. Other distinguished invitees at the opening were The Minister of Nation Building S.M.Chandrasena, Minister of Nation Building Susantha Punchinilame, Minister of Co-operatives Abdul Majeed, Governor of the North Eastern Province Adm. Mohan Wijewickrama, Chief Minister of the Eastern Province S.Chandrakanthan, Chairman/ Director General of the BOI Dhammika Perera.

This opening by a leading manufacturer of apparel is significant as it sends a very clear message to the investor community both overseas and at home that Sri Lanka is back in business and ready to meet all the challenges ahead.

In addition, the opening of such a significant apparel manufacturing plant also provides an insight into the pivotal part in Sri Lanka’s future development the Eastern Province will play. which the Since the factory will employ over 1,000 workers, Tri-Star Apparel Exports has taken a bold step that will transform the lives of many people living in the Thambalagamuwa region.

The BOI commended the Management of Tri-Star Apparel as their action will lead to the creation of new opportunities and infuse much needed vitality to this area. In addition, the factory will play an important role in imparting new skills to workers as they will be employed in a high. The training period of each of the workers who are drawn from all the communities living in the Trincomalee district is 6 weeks will be techndogical environment.

The BOI is confident that the country is recovering from the damage of three decades of conflict, and that other enterprises will follow Tri-Star’s lead and start projects of this nature.

Tri-Star’s new factory falls within the ambit of the BOI’s Eastern Re-awakening Programme. It is a part of a strategic directive of the Government to create conditions for investment and employment opportunities to move to the areas affected by the recent conflict. This BOI programme will succeed in bringing jobs to the people, rather than force them to move to areas where openings already exist.

The opening of this new factory is a positive indicator. It comes at a time when the Government engaged in safeguarding the apparel sector, which is a strategic industry for Sri Lanka, employing nearly one million and accounting for half of the country’s exports. This is to strengthen the Sri Lankan apparel sector so that it is capable of meeting the challenges posed by the post recession global economy.

This has to be done both at a local and international level with the Government and private sector coordinating their efforts to safeguard existing arrangements and strengthening the presence of Sri Lankan made garments in leading markets.
